Finishing and mounting
Walnut needs almost nothing: a clear oil or a matt lacquer deepens the colour and stops there. Stain is usually a mistake — it muddies the natural contrast between heartwood and sapwood, which is the whole reason to pay for walnut.
It fades. Direct sunlight lightens walnut noticeably within a year or two, and unlike most woods it goes paler rather than darker. On a wall facing a window, a UV-blocking finish is worth the extra cost.
Sand to 180 grit and stop. Going finer burnishes the surface and stops the oil penetrating, leaving a blotchy finish that only shows up after it dries.
